Pastor David Grisham shouting ‘transgenders aren’t real’ unsuccessfully tried to shut down a library “Drag Queen Story Time” reading last June. The Children wouldn’t have any of it then, and apparently, neither will a judge now.
A group of ‘evangelists’ filed a lawsuit on Friday, October 19th suing Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Rhea Lawson, the head of the city’s libraries. The group lead by anti-gay crusader Chris Sevier are trying to stop the events claiming that “Drag Queen Story Time” promotes ‘obscene speech’ and violates the first amendment’s establishment clause.
And yesterday U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal wrote the group’s request for a temporary restraining order halting the events had “no basis” and denied the request.
Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like–according to the website–drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.
Sadly we can’t discount the lunacy of David Grisham and his ilk as he has nearly 5,000 Facebook friends . Equally tragic when watching his dispatch, you will notice that the children started booing him when he said the word ‘pastor’.
