Minister for Women and Equalities Liz Truss proposed banning transgender youth health care while addressing the Women and Equalities Select Committee on April 22. She made these comments regarding healthcare while addressing the committee on the unrelated topic of Gender Recognition Act Reform (GRA).
The GRA reform was originally proposed as a way to remove bureaucratic barriers allowing trans people to make timely amendments to legal documentation.
Pink News reports that Truss’s statement sparked immediate alarm among parents of transgender youth and concern from LGBT+ organizations, and has been interpreted as a direct threat to the currently available healthcare for trans youth in the UK.
Healthcare for trans under 18s is not governed by the GRA.
The fact that Truss, the minister for women and equalities who dislikes “identity politics” and wants to rename the government equalities office the “ministry of freedom“, has conflated trans healthcare with legal gender recognition has been an additional source of concern for the trans community
While Truss didn’t address how in her view the country should deal with transgender adults, she suggested that new ‘checks and balances’ were needed leaving the topic of trans rights open to debate.
The Conservative (Tory) party member made a mockery of her title when she steered the ‘equality’ committee towards transphobic reefs recommending that the NHS halt life-saving treatments for minors.
Currently, the National Health Service (NHS) provides counseling to gender dysphoric youth 17 years and younger. Once a child has reached 17 they may be considered for hormone blockers to delay the onset of puberty.
This 100% reversible treatment gives both healthcare providers and the patient an additional year before prescribing hormones (HRT) is considered.
If the young adult survives those formative years they will have safely navigated their most vulnerable times thanks to the NHS. The current NHS regiment is a proven remedy when suicidal ideation, left untreated, tragically results in many gender diverse children taking their own lives
Liz Truss wants to end the NHS life-saving treatments prompting thousands to protest.
23,000 have signed a change.org petition, outraged that the United Kingdom might once again be the leading cause of transgender youth suicides. Britain has done incomprehensible damage historically as a colonial power perverting cultures with deadly laws criminalizing transgender people.
Pakistan and India are just now reverting to precolonial times welcoming the gender diverse back into society.
Liz Truss’ move to restrict healthcare access for trans young people is one of the most damaging policy moves for trans rights in the UK in recent memory.
This was done without consultation, is without legal basis and will be fought all the way. https://t.co/5giKq935oE
