U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praises Conchita Wurst’s EuroVision win as an electrifying moment of human rights education

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon thanked Conchita for her beautiful melody then said, “what a great way to mark the 35’th anniversary of the UN Vienna Center in Austria.

Ban Ki-moon said, “I usually don’t follow the EuroVision song contest, but this time I didn’t fail. When I heard that she won I knew that she was a star of the world.”

Ban Ki-moon explained why her win meant so much to by saying she confounds people’s preconceived ideas of sexuality and gender and praised her win as an “electrifying moment of human rights education.” adding that “Conchita promotes respect for gender diversity which a core value of the United Nations charter.

The Austrian 2014 Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst today performed live at the United Nations in Vienna in front of Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. Together they spoke of the need for respect and tolerance for everyone. “Discrimination has no place in the world of the 21st Century,” said Ban Ki-moon.
