Last week TX LT Gov Dan Patrick cheered the failed repeal of NC’s discriminatory law known as HB2. In the best Jim Crow traditions, he wished privileged straight and cisgender whites a very merry Christmas and happy new year. Patrick posted this to congratulatory message to his website.
Everyone else, well you can just go to hell.
See, HB2 isn’t just about laws which discriminate aginst trans people as Dan Patrick would have you believe. Furthermore, Patrick outright lies when saying that the opponents of HB2 “demand no restrictions on restrooms,” or that his views have support across political and social demographics or would in any way ensure the safety of women.
HB2 targets poor people, primarily poor people of color using the ‘contentious’ public accommodations as a wedge issue. Dan Patrick’s extremists, like the NC GOP, have one final objective, the impoverishment, and disenfranchisement of all minorities. Patrick knows that fear manipulated with his bathroom bill could be the end to his means.
I have seen that strategy of obfustication work effectively in Texas. While most people of color who I see daily are supportive there are a few who made their glee obvious to me when Trump was elected. Their only desire was to hurt me personally, but their celebrations quickly concluded when the reality of the trump administration began to hit home. It was then that they realized that as people of color they are now as much a target of Trump as I am. Arguably, even more so.
The Black Press USA reports that in a daring move for the oldest civil rights group in the U.S., the NAACP is set to formally call for a boycott of the state of North Carolina during the last week of 2016.
“Led by North Carolina State Chapter President Dr. William Barber, the boycott would be another bold move in Barber’s “fusion politics” strategy that joins Blacks and progressive Whites together on several issues and has a specific history in North Carolina dating back to the 1890s. Barber is focused on voting rights, fighting voter suppression and joined interests that focused on the original meaning of the Constitution.”
HB2 isn’t just a bathroom bill it also prevents municipalities in North Carolina from enacting anti-discrimination policies, setting a local minimum wage, regulating child labor, or making certain regulations for city workers. The legislation initially removed the statutory and common-law private right of action to enforce state anti-discrimination statutes in state courts but was later amended to restore that right.
The question I have is why? Why would Dan Patrick be so intent on targeting transgender women when he himself acknowledges that there is no need for that? Why would Dan Patrick bring down on Texas the wrath of the sporting and entertainment business?
Is Dan Patrick’s hate of transgender woman so intense that he would sacrifice billions of dollars in revenue and the good name his own state? It’s not too late for Patrick to walk away from this. The Governor and the speaker of Senate have already indicated that they have no taste for this.
I don’t harbor any animosity towards you Dan Patrick and wish you a happy and prosperous new year. I just wish you would reciprocate.
