Transgender teen Pietra Valentina, 16, was stabbed to death Monday morning. She is the second trans child to be murdered in Ceará in the first 90 days of the new year. Valentina was killed on March 5th in the Travessa São Sebastião, Bairro Pio Xll, in Juazeiro do Norte, in the state of Ceará, Brazil.
G1 reports that in an unusual twist, police haven’t misgendered Pietra or as of yet released her birth name.
The Civil Police of the State of Ceará (PCCE) and the Military Police are working together to identify and capture the perps. The Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (SSPDS) did not have any additional information about the victim’s identity or the circumstances of her murder.
According to sources, the Forensics unit from of the State of Ceará (Pefoce) was at the scene of the crime and will assist in the investigation. A police inquiry was launched at the Homicide for the Protection of Persons (NHPP) of the Regional Police of Juazeiro do Norte.
According to the TDoR project, there have been 1607 trans people murdered in Brazil since record-keeping began in 1998. Of those 101 people have been killed in the small eastern state of Ceará.
The TDoR project reports that in January 2021, 13-year-old transgender teenager Keron Ravach was killed in the same state. She was beaten to death by a 17-year-old male who later confessed to her murder and the attempted murder of his own mother.
