Cathalina Christina James, 24, was found shot dead at the Quality Inn and Suites In Jacksonville Florida on Sunday. Ms. James is Jacksonville’s third transgender woman of color to be murdered in three months. We knew of her death on Monday but only found out her name after her mother learned of her murder. The agonizing wait to learn her name was due to the Jacksonville police lack of community interaction. According to the Jacksonville Transgender Action Committee, this is an easy fix as many cities have policies in place which put an empathize on community interaction and proper police reporting techniques.
Monica Roberts wrote on TransGriot that “Cathalina is not only the 13th person killed this year and the third in Jacksonville alone, she is the seventh African American trans and GNC person we have lost to anti-trans violence this year.”
Media reports had sound bites from the rally and but precious little of substance. The three videos below were posted today by the Jacksonville Transgender Action Committee. The third video was recorded as community members spoke to the city council.
