Gunmen killed Becky González Reyna, a one-year-old and 12 family members at a birthday party in Minatitlán, Veracruz, Friday night in one of worst massacres in Mexico this year.

According to survivors, the men burst into the party venue asking for transgender woman Becky González Reyna, when they just started firing.

The Civil Police Force of the state of Veracruz, Federal Police and the Mexican Army have identified 2 men, from the Jalisco Cartel Nueva Generación in Veracruz, as responsible for the killing.

Some believe the murder of the 14 people was a failure to pay the bill for one of the businesses of Ms.Reyna’s AKA “La Becky” at her bar “La Esquina del Chacal” or “The Jackal’s Corner”, a few meters from where the attack occurred.

But transphobia can’t be discounted without evidence indicating otherwise.

Through social networks circulates a photo allegedly of “The Lizard” or “Mataniños”, presumed of the massacre. Also of José Roberto Sánchez, nicknamed “Comandante 80”, who is thought to be in charge of the Jalisco Cartel.

The latter, the “Comandante 80”, was an agent of the Public Ministry in Acayucan, Veracruz, when Javier Duarte was governor of the state, today he is the leader of the “El Mencho” cartel.

According to four others were injured in the attack and are in stable condition at a local hospital.

Little of substance is known about Becky González Reyna, leaving media to speculate about whom she really was.
If it were not for the vigilance of the group Trans Violence News and our appetite for tabloid news overwhelming society’s willingness to deny trans lives existence, we would not have known that she was transgender.
