Two transgender women, Gerri Cannon, and Lisa Bunker were elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives on Nov. 6th 20118. They will be joining Virginia state Del. Danica Roem as the only transgender members of any state legislature in the country.
Gerri Cannon (D) beat incumbent Matthew Spencer (R) by a thousand votes in a race for Strafford 18. Cannon was endorsed by LGBTQ Victory Fund and Emily’s List and has a laudable 33% approval rating from the NRA.
Gerri worked closely with members of Rights and Democracy NH, the NH ACLU, GLAD, Freedom for all Americans and PFLAG NH on the Freedom New Hampshire Steering Committee to pass Legislation for the Rights of Transgender people in 2017 & 2018.
Transgender woman Lisa Bunker also won in New Hampshire taking Rockingham 18. Lisa Bunker was endorsed by the LGBT Victory Fund, Lisa’s List and the AFL-CIO.
Before setting up shop as a full-time author in Exeter, Lisa Bunker had a 30-year career in non-commercial broadcasting, most recently as Program Director of the community radio station in Portland, Maine. Besides New Hampshire and Maine she has made homes in New Mexico, southern California, Seattle, and the Florida panhandle. Lisa’s spouse, Dawn Huebner, is also a writer, and has a psychology practice in town. Lisa has two grown children. In her leisure time she reads, plays piano, knits, does yoga, and studies languages.
“After the election two years ago, I feared for the future of our country. After the election last year, when Danica Roem won in Virginia and showed me a trans woman could get elected, I decided to do all I could. And today I have my hope back. Decency, civility, respect, diversity, love: these were the winners last night. Thank YOU for everything you did to help bring this victory about!”
