Transgender actress Jen Richards joins the cast of Nashville

Transgender actress Jen Richards is going country in Nashville! Nashville season 5 that is.

Emmy-nominated writer, actress and producer Jen Richards (Her Story, Doubt) has Joined the cast of “Nashville in a recurring part for the series fifth season.

According to Taste of Country Richards will appear in a recurring role as Allyson Del Lago, a physical therapist. The casting marks CMT’s first transgender character and makes Richards the first out transgender actor on the network.

Not that we haven’t been at the heart of country but this is great news, and potentially controversial too. The show knew they were getting canceled  after season 4 and made some preliminary cast changes to generate interest from other networks. But none of the cast changes were more intriguing than writing in a transgender part actually played by a transgender person.
“Nashville” is a country music show filmed primarily in Tennessee, the heart of the bible belt, a state known for their homegrown anti-transgender sentiments.
What they did worked as the fan favorite was picked by CMT for a fifth season.
