Trans woman Marquis Kiki Fantroy murdered in Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade police said transgender woman Marquis “Kiki” Fantroy was shot just before 5 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Southwest 224th Street and 115th Court. Her mother said her 21-year-old transgender daughter was returning from s party with friends when they were approached by a group of men seeking sex. Her mother tearfully said that Kiki was shot when she refused their advances. reports that Marquis “Kiki” Fantroy is the 3rd Floridian, the 22nd American and the 203rd transgender person worldwide to die unlawfully since the November 20th 2018 TDOR.

  1. I researched her name as reported by a number of LGBTQI publications because as you pointed out the name Marquis has male connotations.

    As we all know gender is not a binary. This holds true for names, especially in regards to people in early transition. In her case, she didn’t have a social footprint so I ended up following Monica Roberts’ lead story and published her name as she did.

  2. “Marquis” is Kiki’s deadname.. An article about her from a pro-trans website should be aware of this and not put it in headlines, especially with her chosen name in quotes as if it were a nickname. The least she deserves is having people remember her as herself.
