In another (and unfortunately usual) regrettable episode of violence against the Brazilian transgender population, Bárbara (Babi) Trindade, 22, a transgender PSOL (Partido Socialismo e Liberdade – Socialism and Freedom Party) activist, was left tetraplegic.
Domingo Mendes, who belongs to a locally influential family, was dating Bárbara at the time. On April 3rd, following the spread on social networks of rumors of their relation, Mendes called Babi (as Bárbara is usually known) to meet him near the city council and then shot her twice. The bullets hit her on the jawbone and on the spine.
It happened in Presidente Dutra, in the center north of the Bahia region. According to Rubi Santos, of the LGBT movement, due to the family’s influence, the case remained hidden for a month: “The crime was muffled because the suspect’s family is influential in Presidente Dutra. When the (LGBT) collective and the PSOL learned of it, we contacted the victim to find out what happened” stated Rubi to CORREIO.
Babi is hospitalized in the ICU of the Hospital Regional de Irecê (Irecê Regional Hospital), in serious condition, waiting for a surgery to remove the bullet that is still lodged in her back. In contact with CORREIO on Tuesday (2), Rubi, who accompanies Bárbara at the health facility, reported that Babi has a mild hospital infection and needed to be tracheostomized.
At the moment, she has no movements from the neck down, but after surgery, she should recover movements on the arms. The procedure should be done in a hospital in Salvador. “We are waiting for her to get better from the infection and for a vacancy to be able to transfer her to the capital,” Rubi said.
Mendes is detained in Presidente Dutra police station and has already filed a request for habeas corpus.
Barbara’s family and the LGBTQI collective began a fundraising and grocery campaign to assist in her treatment. According to Rubi, Barbara’s family is very needy and needs all possible support.
“We are collecting geriatric diapers, other supplies and money to help the family in her transport to Salvador,” he said. Cash donations can be made at the Agency: 0780; Operation: 013; Account: 00074700-2; On behalf of Renata Silva Ferreira; Bank: Caixa Econômica Federal.
The PSOL will file an action with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office to request, as a matter of urgency, the appropriate legal measures. According to state party chairman Ronaldo Santos, the attempted murder that occurred with Babi represents yet another crime of homophobia.
“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case! Every day hundreds of trans women suffer physical, psychological and emotional attacks. The PSOL will do everything so that Domingo Mendes will be punished according to the Legislation in force in the country! “, Guarantees.
According to Grupo Gay da Bahia, in 2016 there was a 22% rise in the number of trans people murdered in Brazil, comparing to 2015. And according to ANTRA (Associação Nacional de Travestis e Transexuais – Transexuals and Transvestites Nacional Association) in May 2nd, there was a record of 53 trans people murdered since January 1st.
