Transgender Marine Corporal Evander Deocariza marched in the San Deigo Pride the same week that Secretary of Defense Ash Carter issued a directive to establish protocols so trans people can serve openly.

Corporal Evander Deocariza and the US military are marching into the 21st century in a pride where the whole trans community was named as grand marshal.

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter’s July 13th two-part directive ordered a 6-month study to find ways for transgender troops to serve openly. The second directive essentially told commanders to cease discharging trans troops if coming out was the only issue.

When Corporal Deocariza read that directive he came out officially to his commander and made the decision to march in the parade. The Stars and Stripes read globally by our troops reported the he did so because he wanted the world to know that a good Marine can also be transgender.

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter’s two part directive reads in part “At my direction, the working group will start with the presumption that transgender persons can serve openly without adverse impact on military effectiveness and readiness, unless and except where objective, practical impediments are identified. Second, I am directing that decision authority in all administrative discharges for those diagnosed with gender dysphoria or who identify themselves as transgender be elevated to Under Secretary Carson, who will make determinations on all potential separations.”

Liberty Zabala reports for NBC 7 at the San Deigo Pride parade are amazing and incredibly intuitive. You can find her on Facebook and twitter at @LibertyNBC7SD

This is a huge step forward for the military and for our individual transgender troops both active and retired. You can breathe a sigh of relief now. It will get better. But It goes without saying that trans troops won’t be given or expect any ‘special rights’ and as all of us vets know, you best have your ‘duckies in a row’ if you decide to enlist.

dIE INS BY TRANSGENDER FOLK WERE HELD ALONG THE ROUTE KEEPING FRESH THE FACT THAT A TRANSGENDER PERSON IS MURDERED EVERY 29 HOURS.
