La Plata Trans activist Laura Elena Moyano was brutally beaten Dec 23rd in her apartment by two men. She suffered multiple cuts, her face was disfigured and she was a stabbed in the lung. Laura was admitted to the San Martin hospital in critical condition.

Moyano, a student of Journalism and Communication at the UNLP is well known for her work as vice president of the civil association OTRANS La Plata, an organization that fights for the rights of transgender people in Argentina.

The court isn’t investigating the attack on Laura Moyano as a hate crime even though evidence indicates is was. La Plata activists believe that the murder of Diana Sacayan and this latest attack are evidence of the systemic male violence perpetrated against women and not robbery as the court would have us believe.

Claudia Vasquez Haro authored a statement for OTRANS which reads in part.

In recent days, members of the sex / generic diversity we have seen resurgence neo-Nazi practices, since the events that took public state in Mar del Plata , to the brutal beating Laura Elena Moyano, a militant trans Plata on 23 December. Such practices not only are they repudiate, but in times where information is withheld or distorted, it is imperative them visible so that society is aware of the degree of vulnerability to which you are subjected. Also, to urge public officials on duty to take urgent measures to stop these violent discriminatory acts often end up taking the lives of people TLGBI (trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual and intersex).

WHAT HAPPENED IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT, BUT PART OF A DEEP SYMBOLIC STRUCTURE THAT RESPONDS TO A HETERO / MALE MANDATE THAT ORGANIZES EVENTS, FANTASIES AND GIVES THEM INVISIABILIRTY.

“Discard the motive of robbery,” Haro continued “because I believe it would be a simplistic way to justify what happened. On the contrary, these acts are a clear message mafia-type, as argued by the researcher Rita Segato in relation to the dead women of Juarez.

Both Laura brutal beating and the trans femicides -Amancay Diana Sayan, to cite one example-  enhance the hatred towards people with different identities.

It is a case of gender violence, aggravated by her auto perceived identity. A recurrent problem, known by many as “transphobia”. It is a social problem and is one of the issues that journalists have to look, as well as justice.

There’s only one person arrested for the stabbing. The prosecutor involved in the case, Leyla Aguilar, labelled the fact as “attempted murder”, ignoring the aggravating hate crime due to her self-perceived gender identity.
