“If you’ve grown up free you don’t know what freedom means.” East Berlin escapee who flew over the wall in a balloon.
As a solider, I spent many years operating “Hawk,” an air-defense missile system in West Germany. Often the powers, both east and west, would line up miles of tanks thousands of troops and advance to the frontier. It was called ‘reforger’ in the west.
It wasn’t just tanks. They did the same with fighter aircraft. Massive flights of hundreds of fighters would fly at supersonic speeds at tree-top level to within a kilometer of the border and turn back at the last second. However, one day the Soviets over flew the border, perhaps miscalculating the distance, and I was given a fire light.
If I had pressed that button the instant it lit the great holocaust would have begun. I hesitated and looked back at the officer in charge. By the time I turned around and with my finger on the button ready to press it, the light, seen at the bottom of the photo to the right, was out.
I’ve had nightmares since about Soviet Mig-25’s screaming unfettered up a beloved German evergreen valley.
Today I just realize why Planet Transgender means so much to me and remember just how much freedom means. From our ‘about’ page…
Published since 2007, Planet Transgender has strove to remove language barriers bringing our global transgender community together. In doing so we help in uniting our voices making undeniable those who were once invisible.”
The Planet is about freedom and reunification of our people. However, I am horrified about how Putin is nationalizing his country, whipping his citizens into a nostalgic frenzy attacking and segregating our people once again. We in the LGBT community have been sounding this alarm before the 2012 Olympics. The world largely ignored us then. I hope that the free world remembers they first came for….
….the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
There is still hope. Putin stop this madness. Respect your neighbor’s borders and sovereignty. Withdraw your army from Ukraine. Please for the love of humanity let us live in peace.
