Tempe Tavern apologizes to transwoman Brianna Sandy for refusing service

Brianna SandyThey thought she was a man in a dress, so they denied her service.

Sandy returned to the Tempe Tavern accompanied by her attorney and was given a ‘apology’ that local media said made her ‘eyes roll’.

Brianna Sandy said she went to the bar to watch a horse race on the way home and was having a good time up to that point.

Rob Tasso, owner of the Tempe Tavern told AZCentral he thought Sandy was a man in womans clothes.

“Excuse me if I say this incorrectly, I don’t know the proper terminology, but in layman’s terms, we have guys wearing dresses, dressing up like women and prostituting all across this area,” Tasso said

UPDATE: 6/10/2015 The Pheonix Times reports:

According to Reverend Jarrett Maupin, the local civil rights activist that is counseling Sandy on the matter, separate complaints were also filed today with civil rights division’s of the Arizona Attorney General’s office and the Department of Justice. (New Times has been unable to confirm these complaints as of this afternoon.)
