SD Gov. to sign anti-trans bill without ever having met one?

“I’ve never met a transgender person that I’m aware of” Gov. Dennis Daugaard candidly admitted during a news conference Thursday. Daugaard said although he remains puzzled about transgender issues he doesn’t see that as an obstacle in his decision-making process. He said that based on what he has heard, it sounds like a good bill for maintaining student privacy, saying he’ll look at “archived information” for the basis of his decision.

South Dakota legislators drew the wrath and condemnation of the community last week when in a video broadcast they dehumanized transgender students calling them “twisted”. youth who have made bad life choices.

The bill which would void the state’s newly adopted high school athletic policy has many districts worried about legal costs defending what is seen as an indefensible law due it’s unconstitutionally.

Rob Monson, executive director of School Administrators of South Dakota supported the bill until a provision requiring the state to pay for lawsuits was stripped away burdening the local districts with the legal costs.

The bill HB 1195 passed through committee Thursday and will be voted on by the Senate where it is expected to pass.
