Protests erupted on Friday in Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin, and Wroclaw following the arrest of transgender activist Malgorzata Szutowicz, known best as “Margot.”

Half a million have signed lets get to a million! Change.org petition Abolish current anti-LGBT laws and protect LGBT people in Poland, call the EU to intervene

Szutowicz a member of stopbzdurom (Stop the Nonsense) enraged conservitives by draping Pride Flags over monuments and cutting the tires of a van with slogans accusing LGBT people of pedophilia. She is being held in pretrial detention for two months according to Action News Jaxsonville.

The protests come amid an intensifying standoff in Poland between the LGBT rights movement and the conservative government, which has declared it an alien, dangerous “ideology.” President Andrzej Duda, who was sworn in for a second term Thursday, won re-election on a strong anti-LGBT platform, and social tensions have been rising. MP’s protested at Duda’s swearing in by wearing colors of the Pride Flag.

Dunja Mijatovic, the human rights commissioner for the Council of Europe, the continent’s top human rights body, called Saturday for her immediate release.

“Order to detain her for 2 months sends very chilling signal for #FreedomOfSpeech & #LGBT rights in #Poland,” Mijatovic tweeted.
