One arrested after gang posts video of attack on Phoenix trans teen

Dakota kern

A video posted on Facebook by the attackers shows transgender teen Dakota Kern in a fetal position as a mob of 20 kicked and punched her.

Dakota Kern says she was invited to a pool party at the complex near 35th Avenue and Dunlap in Pheonix Arizona on August 16. The 18-year-old believes she was lured to the pool by acquaintances so that they and strangers could attack her.  Kern said soon after arriving they began yelling gay and transphobic slurs telling CBS 5 it was a planned hate crime.

One juvenile was reportedly arrested today, August 21st, but because of the youth’s age, no details were revealed. Dakota Kern told The CBS affilate she wants the police to arrest the other as well.

Phoenix police say their bias crimes unit is investigating. The unit handles cases where crimes occur, in whole or in part, as a result of a prejudice toward an individual or group.
