Oklahoma teacher tells middle schoolers it’s “sinful to be transgender”

“When she called me, I was shaking and crying and I couldn’t even form thoughts,” Dawn Snodgrass told KFOR. “I was very upset,” she said about the transphobic incident at the Middle School in Frederick Oklahoma.

“When she called me, I was shaking and crying and I couldn’t even form thoughts,” Dawn Snodgrass told KFOR. “I was very upset,” she said about the transphobic incident at the Middle School in Frederick Oklahoma.

“The teacher said that it’s sinful to be trans and change your body. It was very infuriating because I have a lot of friends that are LGBTQ and then I am,” said her daughter Karagyn.

“And they brought up the Bible and that they were killing [them] back then. There was no reason for that to be brought up,” said the preteen.

The 12-year-old, who identifies as a member of the LGBT community, said this isn’t the first time her 6th grade class turned to scripture and the penalty they said was brought upon LGBT people in biblical times.

Dawn said she immediately marched up to Frederick Middle School to speak to administrators. The principal told Snodgrass her daughter’s teacher was humiliated, horrified, and sorry.

“She knew what she had done and that she won’t do it again. And I told him that’s not enough for me,” said Dawn. “I will not tolerate my daughter or that class being singled out.”

Snodgrass said after posting what happened on Facebook, she found support for her cause.

Red River

Fredrick Oklahoma is 30 miles north across the red river from the one building 100 student Texas Harrold independent school district.

Harrold Superintendent David Thweatt filed a lawsuit in 2016 at the behest of Texas Attorney General Dan Paxton to stop Obama’s transgender policies. Thweatt took this action despite admittedly having no transgender students enrolled in his district.

Fredrick Oklahoma is 180 miles due west of Achille, Oklahoma which like the aforementioned is nestled along the Red River just over the line from Texas. Two years before in 2018 Maddie, a transgender child, and her family was forced to flee after she was repeatedly criminally threatened by adults from the Achille school district.

This area is a hotbed of transphobia and homophobia. It won’t begin to change until others make these incidents public as Karagyn, Maddie and their families have.

Dawn Snodgrass said that wasn’t good enough and she won’t rest until she is sure that her child can attend school without fear of being discriminated against.
