You might recall the stir when Miss Transgender UK 2015 announced the Grand Prize, SRS, naming it in honor of Leelah Alcorn. Besides the controversial naming, many were upset since it wasn’t made clear at first if the winner had options other than accepting SRS.
There’s a vocal element within the trans movement who feel that we own our bodies and that offering body modification for ‘winning’ a contest with hopes to fit within the gender binary sends the wrong message entirely.
Miss Transsexual Australia 2016 avoided the UK competition’s faux pas in its entirety by stating that winner has options. Here’s the thing. The alternate prizes, however well meaning, are also body modifications.
Who decides if you are cis or trans?
The Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia rules state that operative status is not a condition to participating but does state that all contestants must have been “born male”.
Broadly, the Miss Gay section of the competition is for drag queens and female impersonators and Miss Transsexual is for those who have transitioned or are transitioning from male to female, but the competition’s founder, Gayzha Davao, encourages entrants to choose their own category.
“It’s not really for us to define them, it’s up to them how they want to define themselves,” she said.
For the winner.
A gift voucher for the surgery is offered by Kamol Hospital, an aesthetic center based in Bangkok, is for a free male-to-female sex reassignment surgery that includes a return airfare accommodation and cash worth US$15,000.
“The choice of sex change surgery is purely up to the winner,” said co-pageant organizer, Gayzha Davao in a statement published by GMA network
“She can choose to have a sex change, or, undergo cosmetic or plastic surgery services other than a sex change, at one of the Thailand’s top cosmetic and plastic hospitals.”
Davao underscored that pageant organizers are not advocating surgery or sex change surgery for transgender people.
“As a beauty pageant organizer, our role is to raise awareness and promote acceptance and positive images of transgender people,” Davao added.
However you feel about the prizes, give these two videos of the 2015 pageant a chance, they are a LOT of FUN to watch. Our gorgeous trans girls clearly stole the show at the 2015 Miss Gay and Transsexual 2015 contest.
