When transgender woman Jady Morelli and her wife Amy Russell bought their ‘perfect home’ in Allendale Township Michigan 10 years ago they couldn’t have imagined it being shot at.
The Ottawa County Sheriff investigated and observed that it was likely a 22 caliber bullet that passed through their window, possibly the result of “target practice”.
“This is assault and it could’ve killed someone,” Amy Russell told Woods TV.
This wasn’t the first time Jady Morelli and Amy Russell have suffered transphobic attacks.
“Ever since we put the transgender flag up, we’ve had our property vandalized and it’s a hard thing to go through,” Morelli said. “It just brings it right home that there are people out there who want to hurt you for who you are.”
First, a mailbox they built for their elderly neighbor was smashed a few days after being put up. Morelli said the mailbox was painted bright purple and due to where mail is picked up was in their yard, not their neighbor’s. She and Russell believe the person who vandalized the mailbox thought it belonged to them.
Then in 2017, the trans flag that hangs in front of their door was ripped in half. In the summer of 2019, Morelli and Russell say their shutters, which are painted to resemble the transgender flag, were ripped off their home. Although fixed, they say, there is still damage to the bricks behind the shutters.
Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 616.738.4000 or Silent Observer at 877.887.4536.
Michigan Gov. Whitmer Says Trump Incites Domestic Terrorism His spokeswoman Laura Trump said his encouraging chants of ‘lock her up” was all in “fun.”
A neighbor of the couple Jasmine Erricka Glenn, lept to her defense on the Youtube video saying “This is my neighbor I too am transgender in Allendale. Trans people are targeted regularly. I have been attacked in Allendale restaurants and another trans woman had to bring a call to action at Allendale highschool. In a town that refuses to remove confederate soldiers, Violent Racism and Sexism is a near-daily occurrence in Allendale. It was not “target practice” Us trans people are constantly the Targets in this Horrible Bigotted town.”
When I saw what these pictures shared by a mutual friend come across my Facebook feed Tuesday I couldn’t have imagined that a sheriff would so cavalierly dismiss this hate crime as ‘target practice.’
I also couldn’t have imagined anyone would be brave enough to go public with this.
But then I hadn’t met Jady Morelli and Amy Russell.
