Leelah Alcorn’s suicide: Why reparative therapy is deadly.

Leelah Alcorn found no acceptance, only denial from her parents and after time her depression overwhelmed her. Tragically she took her life by walking in front of a semi, a death undeniable, posting this to her tumblr blog

“My mom started taking me to a therapist, but would only take me to christian therapists, (who were all very biased) so I never actually got the therapy I needed to cure me of my depression. I only got more christians telling me that I was selfish and wrong and that I should look to God for help.”

California and New Jersey bans on reparative therapy for LGBT youth withstood legal challenges which is a good. But at the core of the issue it isn’t legal bans, it’s all about acceptance and understanding. Parents can easily skirt the ban by bringing their children to religious therapists as Leelah’s did. I hope in the future parents will consider the harm that they are doing and reconsider

Even after her death Leelah’s mother is in denial posting this to Facebook

My sweet 16 year old son, Joshua Ryan Alcorn went home to heaven this morning. He was out for an early morning walk and was hit by a truck. Thank you for the messages and kindness and concern you have sent our way. Please continue to keep us in your prayers.

Leelah ended her goodby note by saying

My death needs to mean something. My death needs to be counted in the number of transgender people who commit suicide this year. I want someone to look at that number and say “that’s fucked up” and fix it. Fix society. Please.
