Larry Wilmore takes on “Tranny” and Jenner on Comedy Central’s Nightly Show. What could possibly go wrong?

I was aghast when I read my dear friend Tammy Towtone’s facebook note about Bruce Jenner being the topic on comedy central’s Nightly Show. Watching the episode I was startled when they started talking about the trans version of the “N” word! I mean it wasn’t that long ago when we were ridiculed and dehumanized by Saturday night live’s Estro Max skit.

At that moment, a few years ago I knew transsexualism defiantly wasn’t ready for prime time comedy.

But have we reached the trans-comedy tipping point?

From Tammy Twotone facebook note

“Hasn’t happened before.”

“The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore presented a show on Bruce Jenner and ‘his’ transition to womanhood. They did it on a Comedy Show The Larry Wilmore Show, and two of their guest were actually people of trans-persuasion comedian Ian Harvie and advocate Geena Rocero

“There is a long history of transphobia when it intersects with comedy. It’s almost always bad.”

“So, it was a delight to see people of trans-persuasion speaking -and, in this case, joking- for themselves.
Larry nailed it with his grace and talent.”

Never been done before.

“I can tell you for personal experience that the staff and production crew are top-notch. Because, I was invited to attend the taping and get backstage. I very much appreciated their input and their curiosity. They were respectful in every way, and they had a great sense-of-humor.
From my seat, in the audience, I watched a historic moment.”

“It’s easy to write it off because it’s merely a comedy show. But, you’d be making a mistake. Which is that really good comedy can break-down barriers that simply taking can’t do. And, more than that, when the voices making those jokes and sharing their love and their humor, are trans, they share what the world looks like to them, making that connection can bridge the widest gap.”

Larry Wilmore took a chance.
The panelists took a chance.
Nobody got hurt.
