Lady Justice, we need you! Our transgender youth are under attack.

31 healthcare organizations oppose proposed state laws denying trans youth healthcare for the same reasons that they opposed it when the Trump administration tried to do it.

Transgender healthcare, especially for youth, saves lives.

It is immoral and cruel to purposely deprive youth of healthcare, especially during a pandemic.

However, doctors,’ parents’, and advocates’ right to care for transgender youth is once again under attack. This annual payback by GOP lawmakers is taking place in at least 15 states with penalties from fines, loss of licenses to practice, to life in prison.

The Trump administration attempted to institute a similar countrywide rollback by using administrative tools.

And it would have had the same effect nationwide had it not been put on hold in a court of law.

U.S. District Court Judge Frederic Block halted that policy one day before it was slated to take effect and admonished the Trump administration for pursuing the change after the Supreme Court ruling that the 1964 Civil Rights Act’s prohibition on sex discrimination in employment also effectively banned bias based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

States with transgender healthcare rollbacks will fair the same in court and for the same reason. It is illegal.

Children who need trans-affirming medically approved health care are no different than gender diverse people of any age. Their treatment differs though. A healthcare provider can approve puberty blockers if need be, This delays unwanted sexual character development and gives minors a chance to make an educated decision on whether to proceed.

In most cases, they were correctly diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The youth, now a consenting adult can proceed with their transition with a voice and a body that already aligns with their gender expression.

This seems to be a point of contention for GOP lawmakers and TERFs who often point to this healthcare success as a failure.

In 27 states, there are no explicit statewide laws at all protecting people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

It is with profound gratitude we acknowledge the steps President Biden has already taken towards fulfiling his promises of equality. But as President Biden takes the normal steps towards fulfilling his promises Republican state are leaping forward laws that will take years to deal with individually.

It is our hope that the Biden administration quickly enacts an equality act to broadly outlaw this inhuman vindictive targeting of our most precious youth.
