Kami Sid, Pakistan’s first transgender model advocate stuns in this shoot by photographer Haseeb M. Siddiqui, stylist Waqar J. Khan and makeup artist Nighat Misbah.
“Sid’s visibility as a transgender model is vital to challenging the violence and stigma the transgender community faces on a daily basis in Pakistan. It’s a powerful act of normalizing transgender identity. Great Doscussion on dinner last night. Many ideas dicused, many things to come soon. We will amaze Pakistan soon with new developments on the rights of sexual and gender minorites.”
Pakistan’s transgender visibility skyrocketed after the tragic and unnecessary death of Alesha last May.
Her death was quickly followed by an attempt on Arzu life, who was largely seen as the one taking her place. One would wonder how such positivity could persist given that many transgender people are extorted by gangs for sex work. Those who refuse of try to exit the gangs are degraded, beaten, raped and killed.
Only within the last few months have these gangs been made accountable.
Kami Sid was quoted by Utter Depiction as saying “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” said Kami Sid. ” You are able to say to yourself, if I lived through this, I can take the next thing that comes along”.
