We downloaded the Playboy Ines Rau November/December issue (purely for investigative purposes) and walked away impressed by the content and classy pictorials. If Playboys’ intent was to increase sales by being fully inclusive, erotic and informative they surely have our vote.

Ines Rau first got our attention a few years ago with her steamy photo shoot with Tyson Beckford. We figured she would be breaking barriers but who would have thought she would have come this far?

Rau told ColorLines in 2013 that she was inspired to come out by Carolina “Tula” Cossey, an English model who’s appeared in a James Bond film and posed for “Playboy.” In an interview with Models.com Rau said, “After reading [Tolu’s] book [I Am Woman] at least two times I realized how important it is to assume who you are with no fears.”

“I always knew from within, when I was a little kid in my room in the ghetto, that a beautiful destiny was waiting for me,” Ines Rau told Playboy. “I don’t know how to explain it. A little voice was telling me, ‘You’ll see. Patience.’

The reaction from our community as expected was overwhelmingly positive. But there concerns like Emilio who tweeted wondering if her appearance was a milestone or objectification.

Noemí Cívicos tweeted “I just see a dangerously thin woman.” While I really do not know if Ines Rau diets to keep her body thin I have read of models fasting for days before a shoot and intentional completely dehydrating their bodies to look thinner.
