Transgender woman Dewani, 24, died, abandoned by our trans community, stricken with advanced AIDs left laying in garbage next to an HIV treatment center.
Dewani was discovered by members of Trans Action Alliance a few weeks ago in this deplorable state outside of the Iqbal Plaza and with the help of UNAIDS personal were able to get her admitted to hospital where she died left untreated.
This should have never happened and we as a community are equally to blame. She was diagnosed with HIV in the early stages by the Lady Reading Hospital who referred her to the Provincial Aids Control Program and Haytabad Medical Complex which refused to treat her because of her being transgender.
Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkhwa posted to facebook, “Dewani has died in Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) some minutes ago. May her soul rest in peace. Yes, transgender person’s soul can only rest in peace because the cruel world won’t let them live in peace. Dewani was diagnosed HIV/AIDS. There are several responsible for her death which includes Health Department Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Aids Control Program and Haytabad Medical Complex who abandoned her in earlier more treatable stages and fellow transgender people in Iqbal Plaza who have also not shown respect and responsible behavior.
Dewani can not be brought back but it’s not about Dewani only. The Provincial Aids Control Program has no outreach, no awareness, and no prevention program. We have knowledge of dozens of transgender persons who are HIV positive and without any treatment because of fear of stigma and discrimination. The Govt is not realizing the challenge. If they don’t wake up It will be too late.
