This is the same Texas “Freedom Caucus” that petitioned the Supreme Court in a failed bid to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
It is a world upside down in which a child of that age had to endure so much hate. But she and her mom knew we were standing behind them then, as we stand with them to this day.

And this is just the beginning for the daughter of our Lonestar State who is busy winning hearts and an Emmys!
KVUE featured Shappley last year when she was just eight years old. The Emmy Award-winning documentary “Trans In America: Texas Strong” featured Shappley and her mother, Kimberly, who had to confront their religious community while Kai navigated the hardships of going to school and identifying as transgender at such a young age.
Trans In America: Texas Strong is an intimate portrait of Kimberly and Kai Shappley, a mother who has to confront her religious community while her 7-year-old transgender daughter navigates life at school— where she’s been banned from the girls’ bathroom.
Shappley and her family moved to Austin from Pearland Texas in 2018 to find a more accepting environment.
Next Kai Shappley guest stared in episode 4 playing season 1 as Bailey Delvecchio in the remake of the Baby-Sitters Club .
In that episode, Mary-Anne, one of the Babby sitters, learns to speak up when her newest client, Bailey, a young transgender girl, goes to the hospital where her doctors misgender her.
The plotline of “Mary Anne Saves the Day,” episode four, was rewritten to incorporate trans rights, as well as Mary Anne standing up for herself. Bailey helps to make both of these things happen.
The second special session didn’t happen that year but we mustn’t allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security. Read the Texas Republican Party plank which was adopted in 2020 by CLICKING HERE
Look for the Texas legislature’s ‘Freedom Caucus’ to once again attempt to criminalize the social and medical transitioning of minors like Kai Shappley. We will need youthful energetic leaders once again to defeat these bathroom bills.
Kai’s mother tells of the moment she accepted her child as her daughter At the age of four when Kai started praying that the lord take her home at Houston Pride in 2017
