Detroit Transgender Woman Shot, in Serious Condition on the Eve of the TDOR

Screen grab from the CCTV video of the robbery and attempted murderA Detroit Transgender woman known by friends as Chocolate was shot four times during a robbery Friday morning in Ferndale. A CCTV video of 3 men jumping out of an SUV, one with a rifle went instantly viral highlighting on the TDOR the brutality that transgender women of color experience.

The latest news reports indicate that Chocolate was shot 4 times in the back after surrendering her purse and remains in serious condition at a local hospital.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, many gathered in Ferndale to remember members of the transgender community who have been lost to violence.

While the woman survived the shooting, there still weren’t enough candles at the vigil to honor all of the people who have died as a result of anti-transgender violence in a year.

“This year, we’re honoring 487 names, and that’s just one year,” said Michelle Fox-Phillips, of the Gender Identity Network Alliance.
