Danica Roem(D) defeated incumbent Bob Marshall(R) tonight becoming the first transgender person elected to represent Virginia in the state legislature.
Roem ran a steady campaign focusing on issues that affect the quality of life of her constituents. While Roem openly embraces her trans status she didn’t make it a focal point of her campaign.
“As a journalist, Danica Roem has covered the issues critical to Virginians and listened to a wide range of perspectives,” said Virginia House Democratic Caucus Leader David J. Toscano and Caucus Chair Charnielle Herring in a released statement. “During her campaign, Danica expanded this approach by listening to area residents’ concerns and making them integral to her own policy platform.
Marshall, on the other hand, ran a smear campaign misgendering Roem and declared himself Virginia’s “chief homophobe” by introducing numerous anti-LGBT bills including a bathroom bill.
