Daily Beast, Fire Nico Hines for Grindr Outing

Nico Hines

Nico Hines in the foreground with the Daily Beast’s Twitter banner in the background. Yes, that is our flag that the have the unmitigated audacity to fly.

Nico Hines, a self-described heterosexual journalist with The Daily Beast on assignment in Rio downloaded Grindr then outed the Olympics athletes who replied. It is not known if any of the outed athletes are transgender but now their teammates. fans, families and governments know they are LGBT.

The Daily Beast reluctantly edited the article removing the parts identifying the country and sport of each outed athlete. But because of the small numbers athletes, the damage was already done especially those who are from countries where being LGBT is still criminalized.

According to Pink News Hines defended his part saying “For the record, I didn’t lie to anyone or pretend to be someone I wasn’t – unless you count being on Grindr in the first place – since I’m straight, with a wife and child. I used my own picture (just of my face…) and confessed to being a journalist as soon as anyone asked who I was.”

The Daily Beast was eviscerated on twitter, taken to task by an out Olympic Athlete:

Eventually, The Daily Beast removed the story in its entirety and published “A note from The Editors”….

…..in which they (later edited to formally apologize) and promised that “they will do better”.

But they didn’t fire Hines or the editors who must have approved of Hines immoral activity. That might water under the bridge if we gave the now discredited media source the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps Nico Hines learned a lesson from this?

But perhaps not.

While Hines hasn’t tweeted since August 10th while looking for an apology I found Hines had retweeted this homophobic image from a conservative politician, which remains up at post time.

Another tweet by Hines identifies an Olympic village hotel where he says US athletes are staying. It is not known whether he was referring to the Athletes that he tricked on Grindr but at this point anything is possible. This is highly problematic since Brazil is by far the most deadly place in the world for LGBT people.

Benjamin Nicoara has a Petition online demanding that The Daily Beast Fire Nico Hines.

Given the absolutely horrific nature of the event and the reluctance of the Daily Beast to make a meaningful response, I have already fired the Daily Beast.
