Chick-Fil-A stops donating Millions to TWO anti-LGBT groups

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott celebrating with anti-LGBT activists (and one disinterested child) the passage of a Religious Liberty Bill . Dubbed the “Save Chick-Fil-A bill”  the corporate name was co-opted by conservatives uniting haters statewide after San Antiono airport opted for a different chain at its airport. The law, which remains on the books, effectively codifies state-sanctioned LGBT discrimination.  Photo ‘Texas Values’.

An unexpected holiday cheer erupts as a major corporate pawn in the right-wings war on LGBT people renounces hate.

Chick-Fil-A said beginning next year it would no longer donate to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the Salvation Army, two charities known for exclusionary practices and anti-LGBT policies.

Update with a downer

Did Chick-fil-A Stop Donations to Groups Criticized as Anti-LGBT? According to the fact-checker siteSNOPES a Chick-Fil-A spokesperson and most of my friends I jumped the gun and misrepresented the facts in my rush to holiday cheer.

Back to the original story…

Last year, Chickfil-A gave $1.65 million to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and $115,000 to the Salvation Army, according to the NY Times.

Chick-Fil-a said in a statement on its website it would “in the future donate to a smaller number of organizations working exclusively in the areas of education, homelessness, and hunger.”

In an effort to support transparency the world’s largest purveyor of chicken sandwiches included a link to the Chick-Fil-A foundation where past and future donation information can be found.

A multinational global effort

Just days after Chick-fil-A’s first British restaurant opened in October, the chain said it would close the site in six months amid protests led by a group called Reading Pride.

Most recently the situation was inflamed when the NFL announced that English singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding would be performing at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving game halftime show, a game which also serves as the kickoff for the Red Kettle Campaign for Salvation Army reports the Washington Blade.

Goulding praised the Christian organization on her Instagram Tuesday for “providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need.”

Goulding’s followers, however, were quick in expressing their disapproval, citing the Salvation Army’s long history of implementing “homophobic and transphobic” policies and of spreading “anti lgbtq+ rhetoric.”

One commenter pointed out, “They only help *certain* people. Very homophobic, transphobic, anti-LGBTQIA+ organization. Please do your research before endorsing a company that continues to hurt our community.”

Goulding then replied (in a since-deleted comment), “Upon researching this, I have reached out to the Salvation Army and said that I would have no choice but to pull out unless they very quickly make a solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community.” She added, “…supporting an anti-LGBTQ charity is clearly not something I would ever intentionally do. Thank you for drawing my attention to this x.”

That crisis has since been resolved with a compromise with news that Goulding would perform as planned.

The Red Kettle and the nonstop bell is a perennial sore spot for LGBT people. It is a reminder of the duplicity of evangelistic Christianity which embraces that immoral pussy-grabbing president while simultaneously attacking LGBT people.

While the LGBT community reacted positively, more needs to be done. Chick-Fil-A should consider donating to Planned Parenthood and other organizations desperately needed by low-income people.

Not everyone was thrilled by Chick-Fil-A. Some felt that Chick-Fil-A’s move towards fairness was an act of betrayal. This was a bold move by Chick-Fil-A as they will most likely suffer financially in the short term ala Target especially in red states.

When Chick-fil-A president and COO Dan Cathy publicly affirmed the company’s stance against gay marriage in 2012 former Arkansas Gov. and former Republican presidential Mike Huckabee called for a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on his Facebook page.

The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1852 with the stated mission “to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” reports the Washington Blade. Nevertheless, the organization has a history of anti-LGBT policy, such as refusing to comply with legislation and ordinances requiring the extension of benefits to same-sex spouses of employees, refusing shelter and services to people based on their sexuality and gender identity, and offering links to gay conversion therapy organizations on their website. In 2012, a Salvation Army spokesperson told an interviewer that gay people deserve death, according to scripture.

Unexpected holiday cheer! Chick-Fil-La renounces hate! A Multinational effort by LGBT activists wins the day and the season as Love wins Out!
