Boycott Indie film “Adam” a feeding frenzy of transphobic tropes

“Adam”, an Indie film which premiered at Sundance and opened in New York on Wednesday, is about a cisgender male teenager pretending to be a transman in order to trick a lesbian cisgender woman into sex.  Adam .is scheduled to run until August 18 at the NYC IFC The plot summary, which leaves out the most odious details:

“Awkward, self-conscious Adam Freeman (Nicholas Alexander) has just finished his junior year of high school in 2006. When his cool older sister Casey (Margaret Qualley, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) suggests he visit her in New York for the summer, Adam has visions of meeting a girl and finally gaining some actual life experience.

The fantasy doesn’t materialize exactly as expected. Casey has enthusiastically embraced life amidst Brooklyn’s young LGBTQ community and invites Adam to tag along with her to queer bars, marriage equality rallies and other happenings. When Adam falls at first sight for Gillian (Bobbi Salvör Menuez), a smart, beautiful young woman in this new crowd, she mistakenly assumes he is trans. Flummoxed and enamored, he haplessly goes along with her assumption, resulting in an increasingly complex comedy – and tragedy – of errors he’s ill-equipped to navigate.

The film, despite it being feeding ground for anti-transgender groups has been given a pass by some trans people because of the era it represented (2006) and that quite a few trans people were cast and involved in producing it.
I would argue the opposite. The vilest lies told by hate groups now cited as fact by the Trump administration have been validated and brought to the big screen in this wanna-be meet-cute, and worst of all, by transgender people.

One person commented on the petition “Boycott the transphobic and homophobic ADAM film 2018”

With so many positive trans inclusive stories from trans creators why greenlight this hateful mix of the worst stereotypes and hateful trans/lesphobic BS? Why pick a book that needed to be rewritten TWICE to be passable? Why ignore the thousands of voices begging you not to?

LEO ALLANACH panned it on the Advocate surmising Adam as ‘dangerous’.

“Adam lets Gillian continue to think he’s trans as they have sex multiple times. It’s weird, to say the least, but it’s much worse since, as far as we know, Gillian’s a lesbian. She says she’s only ever had girlfriends early on, and yet still pursues Adam because she believes he was assigned female at birth. Later, we find out this is because she was discovering her bisexual identity, and in her own words, “needed [Adam] to be a trans guy for me.”

Between going to a Lesbian sex party disguised as a transman just to get his jollies and infiltrating Camp trans at the Michigan womyn’s musical festival, seen as the very last bastion of feminity by TERFs, you have to wonder why it was made in the first place.

Then consider the legions of cisgender monied men who fantasies are played out by Adam, then defend this travesty
[imdb 1.8 rating review but uptrending] and wonder no more.
