Bollywood to make a joke of transitioning with “Man to Man”

Adah Sharma
Actress Adah Sharma (L) is excited to play opposite Naveen Kasturia (R) in “Man to Man”.

Actress Adah Sharma, who made her Bollywood debut with Vikram Bhatt’s ‘1920’ opposite Rajneesh Duggal, will soon be seen essaying the role of a man in her upcoming comedy film ‘Man to Man’ opposite Naveen Kasturia based on sex reassignment surgery.

Cisgender actress Adah Sharma is “thrilled about playing a man in a comedy film on sex reassignment surgery” according to Gulf News.

Because transpanic is just a riot?

Will Adah Sharma’s beguiling sexual youthful exuberance be enough to pull it off? That question shouldn’t even be in the equation. She is being used.

‘Man to Man’ revolves around actor Naveen Kasturia’s character falling in love and marrying Sharma’s character who later realizes that she was biologically a man *fooled ya* who became a woman after going through surgery.

There are some things about this film that is just wrong,

  • The name.

“Man to Man” conveys the idea that both characters are actually men. This wasn’t a light-hearted double-gender-entendre if you will. The giggles the title might elicit will come at the expense of transgender lives. If India was an ultra-liberal playground where gender diversity was fully embraced the name might get a free pass. Not.

  • That Adah Sharma, a cisgender woman is ‘thrilled about playing a man’ who tricked another man into thinking she was a woman.

If the film had a shred of decency it would make it clear that she knew at her earliest recollections that she was born female. But that wouldn’t leave a single trans gag to laugh at.

“Man to Man” embodies all of the transphobic memes that kill. It will be miraculous if they can transform that into a light-hearted comedy with a social message as advertised. Good luck with that.

Memes (discrete units of knowledge, gossip, jokes and so on) are to culture what genes are to life. Just as biological evolution is driven by the survival of the fittest genes in the gene pool, cultural evolution may be driven by the most successful memes.
