Anjali Ameer has made cinematic history becoming Mollywood’s first transsexual woman to play a leading role, but that journey hasn’t been an easy one.
Anjali Ameer is featured in the soon-to-be-released movie Peranbu, also titled Resurrection, is an upcoming bilingual (Tamil & Malayalam) drama film written and directed by Ram and produced by P. L. Thenappan. The film features Mammootty, newcomer Anjali, and Thanga Meenkal fame Sadhana in the lead roles. Featuring music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film began production in early 2016.
Born into a male body Ameer knew at an early age she wasn’t complete further complicating her self-acceptance was being born into a Muslim Orthodoxy.
After coming out Anjali Ameer’s family initially rejected her. Like many in India’s highly stratified culture, Ameer joined with a trans family earning a meager wage dancing. While there is no disgrace in survival work, Ameer’s desire to be an actress was relentless. She wanted more than just surviving and had a plan to make that happen.
As we can see Ameer has been blessed with a body that allows her to live stealth if she desired, which she did at first. After an initial successful modeling career, she was dropped after her transsexual status became public.
Anjali said she decided to reveal her sexuality as she did not want to, “Act in life, as I am proud to be a transsexual”.
“Since I have undergone a sex change, I am not transgender, I am transsexual, or a trans-woman”, she insists.
