Sao Paulo Hero Beaten to Death For Defending Trans Woman
Sao Paulo Brazil Street vendor Luiz Carlos Ruas, 54, died Sunday evening after coming to the defense of two transgender women. Witnesses say Luiz Carlos Ruas came to the aid of a transgender women who was being attacked by two men outside of a Sao Paulo Subway station Sunday night.
Family told local media that Luiz Carlos Ruas was a kind hearted man who cared about everyone and gave his wares away to those without money. They said he was well known at the Subway Station having been a vendor there for 20 years.
One of the transgender women known only as ‘Brazil’, spoke to reporter Helen Braun, of Radio Jovem Pan, about the moments leading up to the death of Luis Carlos Ruas. According to Brazil, the two men, who are cousins, began to strike her without warning when she got off work.
“It was all very strange. I was leaving the place where I work, and, out of nowhere came a young man who began to punch me. Then came another who started to kick me. There was no exchange of words, before the attack. A friend of mine who is also transgender came to help and picked me up. ” She said.
Family members identified the the two men after seeing the video.
