Two NYC Trans Women Assaulted, Man Charged With Hate Crime
Patrick O’Meara, 38, yelled anti-trans slurs at two transgender women as they entered the McDonald’s at 82nd St. near Roosevelt Ave. in Jackson Heights at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
He called the women “b–ches” and “f-ggots” and attacked them, pushing one woman to the ground and punching and kicking her, police said.
He briefly left the scene and returned with a cane, hitting one of the victims in the left hand, which caused a laceration.
Maria Munoz, who saw the attack, said O’Meara was shirtless and yelling at people on the street before he flew into a rage.
“He was harassing everybody that was walking by but when the trans women walked by he clearly was infuriated,” Munoz said
One of the women was treated at Forest Hills Hospital, while the other was treated at the scene, police said.
Court records show Patrick O’Meara, 38, was being held on $5,000 bond after being arraigned Saturday on hate-crime assault and other charges.
“We will continue to organize our communities and send the message that Jackson Heights and the City of New York have to welcome and embrace all of us, and that hatred does not take place in our neighborhood and in our city,” he added.
In January, he drunkenly stole a Volvo in Manhattan and was charged with grand larceny auto and driving while intoxicated, police said. Officers found a glass crack pipe in his pocket when he was arrested.
He also had at least five other arrests, but they were sealed, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
