London Theatre Becomes Trans-Inclusive

Young Vic

Whilst the United States seems to be locked in a struggle over how to deal with transgender rights and the issues surrounding access to public bathroom facilities a theatre in the UK has made a very public declaration as to their stance on the issue.

Young Vic The Young Vic Theatre in Waterloo, London, posted an image to their Twitter feed on Friday to show their newly installed signage in bathrooms of their theatre, bar and restaurant.  The tweet was accompanied by the hashtags #LGBTQ and #transinclusive.

Whilst some states in America are banning transgender people from using the bathrooms of the gender that they identify with, and in some cases imposing fines or prison time for those who break these rules, there are no laws in the UK that prevent trans people from using public restrooms and facilities.

Under the Equality Act of 2010 transgender people in the UK are legally entitled to use the facilities that match the gender they identify with.  Unfortunately, a lot of people are unaware of this law and, partially in thanks to the laws being passed in America at the moment, believe that they are able to stop trans people from using certain facilities.

Making public statements that people support the rights of transgender people not only makes these views more accepted and widespread, but it also encourages others to do the same.  Hopefully other organisations and businesses will take similar action to the Young Vic Theatre.
